5 and 6 Months

Dear Cole,

How is it that we woke up this morning and you are 6 months old already?  Your little life has absolutely zoomed by and you have made a stressful time in the life of our family so very full of smiles, giggles, and joy!

At the end of June, we packed up everything we owned into two separate locations: a moving truck headed to Grammy and Grandad's house in Walla Walla, WA with the bulk of our belongings and our van and Prius with just the essentials for the big drive across the country to Pittsburgh.  Cole, your daddy is a tetris master.  There wasn't a square inch of those two vehicles that didn't have an item filling it.

Saying goodbye to our Loma Linda family was heartbreaking! Each family we've come in contact with over the last 8 years has impacted our marriage, our parenting, our spiritual walk.  Some goodbyes were more of a "see you later" situation.  We have so many Lome Linda friends who are from the Northwest and plan to settle there.  Knowing we'll see them soon helped those goodbyes not ache as much.  Then there were goodbyes to friends who live on the other side of the country and our paths are not likely to meet this side of heaven.  Those goodbyes stung!  Goodbyes to our church family felt a piece of us was missing.  And goodbyes to our besties, the Nguyens were worst of all!

You know what kept us from despair?  Knowing that in God's Providence He brought us to Loma Linda for our good and for His glory.  Some of us came there kicking and screaming (points to self!) and missed so many days of California goodness because of ungrateful hearts.  That same Gracious God was leading us so clearly to move across the entire country to a foreign land (Steeler country even!) and if we had learned anything it was that His plan is better than ours could ever be.  It's hard to imagine ever having friends as close as we've had in Loma Linda.  Maybe we won't.  But we step forward, trusting that the Lord has great and wonderful things ahead.

You turned 5 months old in Walla Walla at Grammy and Grandad's house.  We had such a fun visit with our family while Daddy got settled into his new job in Pittsburgh and studied hard for his dermatology board exam.  On July 19th, you flew on 3 airplanes to move to Pittsburgh.  Cole, you didn't fuss at all. Not a single peep!  Grammy and I were SO grateful that you are such a dreamy baby because we had enough on our hands travelling across the whole country with three little boys.

By the end of July, you started pushing up onto all fours!

You turned 6 months old on August 2nd.  We spent your 6th month adjusting to Pittsburgh life.  It is hot here and humid but we are absolutely falling in love with this city.  You love to be in your jumperoo and are starting to really laugh at your brothers.  A few weeks after you turned 6 months, we thought we'd go ahead and try some solid food.  Oh Cole...what a disaster!  You were no where near ready.  Your gag reflex was so strong and your poor tongue wasn't mature enough to know how to move food around.  You gagged and ended up vomiting.  Not a fun time.  Sorry, buddy!

You continue to be such a light in our family.  You manage to be the favorite of everyone and keep us all smiling.  We love you, Cole!

3 and 4 Months

Dear Cole,

My heart is bursting with love for you as I reflect on the last two months.  I just can't imagine our family before you, sweet boy.  You are happy around the clock!  You love to smile at anyone and everyone and are happiest when you can be staring into someone's eyes.  At 3 1/2 months you finally found your thumb and could get it in your mouth accurately.  The very next day you learned how to roll over from your back to your front going both directions.  Of course, you immediately hit a sleep regression as your brain processed your new found abilities.

You also hit a massive growth spurt!  You quickly sailed through size 2 diapers and are solidly in size 3 now (your big brother Cade wears size 4!).  You maxed out your adorable 3 month clothes are are completely filling out your 6 month clothes.  It won't be long now before you are in 9 month clothes.  Your legs are super chunky, much to Mama's delight and we can't find your neck under all your fat rolls.

You wake up for the day at 6:15 am, take a morning nap around 8:30 in the baby swing in the living room.  You go down for your big afternoon nap around 12:15 pm, and will either take a giant nap or two shorter ones.  You are begging to go to bed by 6:00pm everyday but we try and push it until 6:30pm.

A few days before turning 4 months, you started to get pretty upset about your sore gums.  You bite on every piece of nearby fabric and quickly pull it out of your mouth.  You are ever so slightly crabby (which we still hardly notice) and prefer for mama to carry you around.  I am trying my best but packing our house while holding a baby and entertaining two older brothers is proving to be quite the challenge.

We have less than one month left of our 8 year California adventure.

We are so very sad and so very happy, nervous and confident, exhausted and energized.  You name it and we feel it.  God has been so gracious to our family, Cole.  In His Providence, he has given us the help we need to move (thank you Grammy, Grandad, and Grandpa!), a family in Pittsburgh to give us an entire household of furniture, a wonderful job for Daddy to finish his surgical training in, and an AMAZING job for Daddy to have after our fellowship is over in Walla Walla. We are all so excited to move back to the Northwest and for you to grow up alongside your family.

You and I are going on a big adventure next week as we head to Tulsa, OK for the Usborne National Convention.  I'm just plain giddy over getting to go and am hoping you'll be a good helper to mama while we are there.  The day after we get back, Daddy will graduate from his residency program.  Needless to say, we'll need some naps.

Cole, I could just eat you up you are such a sweet baby.  Thank you for all the wet kisses and sweet snuggles.

Yours,
Mama

2 Months

Dear Cole,

Daddy had to go for a 5 day trip to Washington DC for a derm conference so Mama was extra excited that her friend Aimee had come to visit.  We had a great time with five boys and two mamas holding down the fort.  Between the dirt piles, jeep driving, wrestling matches, and park outings we managed to get all five boys sick.  Everyone had stuffy noses and coughs which was extra tough for you, sweet boy.  You did great at staying asleep at night but couldn't stay asleep laying down.  This meant that Mama had to hold you upright and not sleep.  Cade got the most sick of the whole crew and ended up with 6+ days of fever and was diagnosed with pneumonia and a sinus infection.

At 1 month, 3 days old your neck was super strong and we had you sleep on your tummy for the first time.  You loved it!

When Aimee and the boys left on March 9th, we were ready to settle into our new normal as a family of five.  Mama was SO grateful to have your big brothers as helpers.  Jack, especially, adores you and loves to lay on the ground with you and chat.  You even get to sit by him in the car because he keeps you happy by putting a paci in your mouth when you are sad and singing you songs (mostly Hark the Herald Angels Sing).

At 7 weeks old, you really started smiling a lot and telling us stories through adorable baby coos.  You also settled into a more predictable pattern of napping and awake times.  You love to sleep in the Maya Wrap ring sling while mama watches the big boys outside and are such a happy baby when you aren't tired.

Sunday, March 27th was your first Easter.  Mama made each of you boys a bowtie that she sewed onto one of your polo shirts.  You all looked adorable and she was able to dress you in a special outfit without spending any money.  Way to go, Mama! :)  We had our 8th Annual Panther Family Easter brunch that morning before church.  It is so very sad to think of leaving this place and these people that we have loved so long.  After a wonderful Easter service at church and naptimes that followed, we were ready for an Easter egg hunt.  Your brothers had SO much fun finding their eggs and easter baskets.

Your favorite thing in the world is to stare into someone's eyes.  You are our deep connection baby.  If left up on our shoulder or facing out for too long, you protest until we look you right in the eyes.  It will be fun to see how your personality develops in the future.

We love you so,
Mama and Daddy

1 Month

March 2, 2016

Dear Cole,
Today, sweet baby, you turned one month old.  You have had quite the whirlwind first month of life with more adventures than we knew what to do with.  Your first visitor (Grammy) arrived the day after you were born.  She jumped right in to baby holding, meal cooking, dish washing, and older brother wrestling.  Grammy is a super hard working lady and the perfect person to have around when a new baby comes along.  She even babysat you a couple times so Daddy and I could sneak out for romantic date nights (well, if you count the grocery store as a romantic venue).

You were born on a Tuesday and the following Sunday, you attended church at Reformed Baptist Church of Riverside.  This also happened to be Superbowl Sunday.  The Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers.  One week and one day after you were born, we took you to BSF. Mama got to lead her group while Grammy held you.  Everyone was happy. :)

At 1 week, 2 days old, we took you for your first trip to the beach.  We had such a special treat when a HUGE pod of 20+ dolphins came right up to the beach to eat fish.  They stuck around for over a half hour and gave us quite a thrill.  Grandad came to visit you on Feb. 11th.

Grammy and Grandad headed home on Valentine's Day and Grandma and Uncle John came down the following Thursday.  The very next day you had your circumcision (ouch!).  We had a fun weekend hanging out with Daddy's family.

On Sunday, February 21st (19 days old) you had your first plane ride.  Mama and Daddy enjoyed holding you, showing you off, and snuggling you as you slept peacefully the whole time.  We were headed to Walla Walla for a job interview for Daddy.  It was a super quick trip.  In fact, we flew back down to CA the very next day.

We thought we'd celebrate you turning 1 month old with our last house guests.  Aimee, Asa, and Matias Diocares flew all the way from Temple, Texas just to meet you!  And oh we had such a fun time.  More on that visit in your next month's update.

Your big brothers adore you!

During your first bath you made the silliest faces.  We couldn't stop laughing!

Sweet friends

Cole's Birth Story

What a gift to be able to sit down for a moment almost two weeks after Cole's birth to reflect back on his birth story.  With three boys all born at the same hospital, you'd think their birth stories would have more similarities than they do.  Cole's pregnancy was very different from his brothers'.  In fact, it was so different that I was convinced that we were having a girl this time.  :)

Leading up to the birth, I wore a maternity support belt to help with round ligament pain, pendulum belly, and hopefully to get him to engage and not be AS overdue as his brother's were.  I also had weekly chiropractic appointments with an amazing doctor who specializes in adjusting pregnant women.  I was much more uncomfortable earlier with this pregnancy and was convinced that our sweet boy was going to make his appearance early...maybe even before the due date.

The night before his due date (Jan 30th), I was up for a good portion of the night with contractions. They were strong but not very long and definitely not rhythmic.  His due date fell on a Saturday and the day came and went without any fanfare.  This time I found myself feeling discouraged as we entered post dates for the 3rd pregnancy.  I started realizing that the potential for another 42 week pregnancy was certainly there and I may not get to meet this baby until Valentine's Day after all.

And then at breakfast on Sunday morning (January 31st), I leaned forward in my chair and felt a little gush of fluid.  Initial thought: "Oh man, I just peed my pants...bummer."  Isn't that funny?  For those that have had multiple babies, you know that peeing your pants isn't exactly a shocking or unusual event.  I went to the bathroom and didn't think it was my water breaking.  So we got ready and headed to Emmaus Church to witness the baptism of our dear friend, Leslie.  It was so wonderful to be there to support her!  After church, I took a good long nap and then headed to the baby shower of my friend, Katie.

When I woke up that night to go to the bathroom around 2am, the real deal contractions began.  These were not Braxton Hicks.  Each contraction came as a wave, wrapping around from my lower back to my front.  Because Jack and Cade were both face up (posterior) when they were born, I only ever had terrible back labor with them.  This time was different.  These were the contractions that you read about in the books.  With Jack and Cade, I literally could not make it through any contractions without making a fog horn-like moaning sound.  With this labor, I was able to relax completely and "ride the wave" up to the peak and back down.  I visualized Cole riding the wave with me and with each time as I consciously relaxed, it was as if I invited him to move down and out.

In total, I had 39 contractions (thank you app on my phone for keeping track) that night.  They were intense but still not settling into a distinct pattern.  By the morning (Monday, Feb. 1st), I was completely exhausted, emotionally and physically.  Dave had to head in to work, but I told him I was going to try and get this baby out TODAY.  Leslie brought her brood of 4 kids over to play in the front yard with my kiddos so that I could try and get labor going.  I was determined to do a four hour cycle in one hour chunks - 20 minutes of pumping with a breast pump, 20 minutes walking, 20 minutes of rest, repeat 4 times.  After my second time through the cycle, not a single contraction had come and I was even more tired and worn out.  I gave up and sent my friend home.

Contractions weren't coming and the only activity I experienced was actually non-activity.  It seemed that Cole was moving a bit less than normal.  I mentioned this to my mom on the phone and she absolutely insisted that I go in to the hospital to get checked out.  I felt too tired to go but when Dave got home, he thought it would be a good idea to go in as well.  So at 3:30pm on Feb. 1st, our dear friend and neighbor Katie Parker, popped over to watch the big boys while we headed to the hospital for a simple non-stress test (standard protocol for women who are pregnant after their due dates).

The labor and delivery floor was hopping.  There was someone in the operating room getting a c-section and another emergency c-section heading out right in front of us.  Needless to say, we were not top priority.  We ended up waiting, and waiting, and waiting to even get into a room for the test.  It was 5:30pm  by the time they hooked up the monitors and were able to check me.  Upon checking me, Dr. Cheung found that the forebag of waters was still intact (whew...I guess I did pee my pants after all!) but she wanted to do another test just to make absolute sure.  And you know what, after that second test, the results came back positive.  Apparently a tiny hole broke up high on the bag which is why there was no big gush.  Change of plans, I guess we need to have this baby today after all.

Because it had been 36+ hours since my water broke, the doctors were eager to get things rolling ASAP.  When they checked me a second time at 8:15pm to see if I had made any progress (I hadn't), the act of them checking me actually got my contractions going on their own.  They started coming every 4 minutes. I was surprised that they still wanted to start Pitocin but they said I needed to not only have rhythmic contractions but also progress in dilation.

Pitocin contractions are beastly.  They are strong and long with very little break in between.  I did all of Cade's labor induced with Pitocin and without any pain meds.  It was such a negative experience that I had promised myself never to do that again.  I knew if I had to be induced that I would choose to have an epidural but when faced with the reality of this choice, I wavered.  So many friends of mine have had terribly negative experiences with epidurals and I was worried about too many interventions leading to a c-section outcome.

But when the anesthesiologist walked in at 10pm to talk about the details I knew right away that I would trust him to put a needle in my spine.  He was kind, warm, calm, and very knowledgeable.  The epidural experience was pretty dreamy top to bottom.  The only negative part was about 45 minutes after it was started, my already low blood pressure dipped way down.  I felt dizzy and my face turned ghostly white.  Luckily after a dose of ephedrine and more fluids, I perked right up.

By midnight, contractions were really regular and Dave and I were settled in a quiet room just enjoying chatting and being together.  The whole atmosphere was very peaceful and calm.  At 1 am, one of Dave's med school classmates, Matt, came in to visit.  He was the senior anesthesia resident on call that night and was exhausted.  He sat down to chat for a few minutes and catch up. After 20 minutes of chatting, I started feeling some intense pressure in my tailbone.  At that point, Dave and Matt were talking back and forth and I was looking for a good moment to interrupt to tell Dave about the pressure.

Just then, we heard what sounded like a gallon of water being poured into a toilet from 3 feet up.  We each looked at each other and then Dave peeked under the hospital bed to see a biohazard bag definitely filling up with amniotic fluid.  "Uh, honey... I think your water just broke."  Before I even had a chance to fully register that fact a new, equally loud and disturbing noise overtook the room.  Let's just say it was a VERY un-lady like moment.  Matt, very awkwardly, popped up from his chair and said as he scrambled for the door, "Um, yeah, you can't help that."  Hahaha....I laugh about it even now.

Our nurse came in to check on me and one look confirmed that baby was ready to make his entrance.  One problem.  There were exactly ZERO doctors on the L & D floor at the time.  In a teaching hospital like Loma Linda, this is actually quite impressive.  Both the attending on call, the back up attending, the senior residents, interns, and even med students were all engaged in other deliveries or c-sections.  The charge nurse came in and said, "Don't do anything."  I thought this was pretty funny to say to a woman with an epidural.  I wanted to say, "No problem.  I haven't been doing anything all along!"

They put in a quick call to the resident on the gynecology service to rush over but then realized there wouldn't be enough time.  Next the nurse said, "Ok, Daddy, are you ready to deliver this baby?"  Dave popped up and got ready to glove up (bless him!) just as Dr. Cheung, the attending on duty zoomed into the room.  She had scrubbed out of the c-section, sprinted into my room, gloved up and with 3 pushes, baby was out.  She quickly stitched me up, congratulated us, and then sprinted back out of the room to go scrub in again to finish the c-section.  Pretty amazing!

Two of the concerns I had in getting an epidural were knowing how to push if you couldn't feel anything (not a problem) and whether or not I would experience that overwhelming sense of relief and love for the baby if I didn't get the natural rush of oxytocin.  In many ways, I would say that surge of emotions was actually greater than any of my other births.  Rather than just relief that the pain was over, I was really able to take in what was happening and enjoy this sweet baby right from the beginning.

It took us a full two days to finally choose a name.  Cole Steven Panther (7lb. 1 oz., 19.5 inches long and born at 1:38 am on Februrary 2, 2016) Cole was my sister's nickname when we were growing up and it felt fitting to name him after his wonderful auntie even though she is a girl. Nicole loves the Lord, is an amazing mother to her three kids, serves tirelessly in her community, and is someone for my kiddos to look up to.  Cole's middle name is Steven which is conveniently the first name of BOTH of his grandpas.  Two birds, one stone.  Both of his grandpas are outgoing, hard working, humble and godly men.
