After our last post, we ended up spending the evening at the famous Marionette Theater seeing a production of Mozart's opera, "The Magic Flute". It was INCREDIBLE!!! The puppeteers made each puppet come to life and the sets and costumes were wonderful. Definitely a night to remember.
Day 20, Saturday, July 20, 2008
In the morning we took a train to Munich to spend the day soaking in all that we could on our way to our last stop, Wuzburg. Our first stop was actually a 45 minute train ride outside the city to the Dachau Concentration Camp. I had been to the US Holocaust Museum in DC, but never to an actual concentration camp site. The entire facility is set up so very well. It can be seen and understood well in a short time, but you can spend all day going more in depth on each topic. Dachau itself was the first and longest running concentration camp of the Nazi party. It served not only as a concentration camp, but also as the training grounds for all of the SS.
As we made our way back into Munich, it became apparent that we were a part of a larger than normal crowd in the streets. Just then we remembered that our guidebook had mentioned a huge party to honor the 850th birthday of the City of Munich. Excellent! This, of course, meant food booths, lots of people, and fun activities, such as a group of sword dancers. What fun! We made our way through the madness to the Hofbrauhaus, the most famous beer hall in the world. It was the most jolly place complete with a cheerful polka band and native Germans decked out in their lederhosen. We had goulash and spaetzle and, of course, huge beers. We walked back to the station, picked up our bags that we had stored for the day and were off to Wurzburg. When Dave was an undergrad, he spent three months here in Wurzburg and this was the first time he had been back since. It was so great to see him around his old stomping ground. He was a kid in a candy store!
Day 21, Monday, July 21, 2008
Wurzburg Day. This morning we wrapped up our gift shopping with no problem at all. Whew! Next we headed to the Residenz, a palace built in the mid 18th century for the prince-bishop of Wurzburg. We took a wonderful tour in English and were blown away by the magnificence of each room. During the afternoon we went on a disappointing goose chase over hill and dell to try and locate a Wurzburg University t-shirt for Dave. I won't go into detail because it will only make me frustrated again. To redeem the day, we popped into a store called, H & M, which I had been wanting to go to for years. What a great time. They sell very fashionable clothes at dirt cheap prices. Dave ended up with twice as many clothes as I did and we just had a blast in the process. Tonight we had one of the best meals of our entire trip. D: Beef Tenderloin with baked tomato, baked potato, and yummy sauces. C: Pork Medallions with a Zucchini-Cheese topping and potato croquettes on the side. We are busy packing tonight and reflecting on our trip. Tomorrow morning we head back home.
