Day 18, Friday, July 18, 2008
We hiked out this morning as the clouds threatened to dump on us. You can imagine the pair of us in the freezing cold weather, wearing chacos, pulling rolly luggage down steep Alpine slopes as I hobbled and winced my way down thanks to my sore muscles. We succeeded however and caught our train to Salzburg.
Most of the time we have been staying outside of the hustle and bustle of each city in order to save money on hotel bills, but this time, Dave booked us a hotel right in the heart of old town Salzburg just off of the Mozart Plaza. Today we wandered the streets and enjoyed the best food thus far outside of Italy. There is an old woman who runs this sausage shop literally in a hole in the wall. We dined on the most perfect hot dogs. They consisted of a delicious bun slathered in mustard, topped with diced sweet onions and parsley, two thin sausages, and sprinkled with curry powder. Delicious. We enjoyed walking through an open air market and popping in and out of shops as we pleased. A wonderful day.
Day 19, Saturday, July 19, 2008
This morning we did something we never thought we'd do.....we took a tour. GASP!!!! Here we have been annoyed at the large tour groups throughout our trip and today we became... "one of those". A trip to Salzburg just doesn't seem complete without the Sound of Music tour. We boarded our bus at 9 this morning and spent the next four hours touring all of the famous sights from the movie and learning the truth about the real Maria von Trapp and family. The tour was cheesy to the max, but both of us enjoyed it nontheless. Immediately following, we toured through Mozart's Residence. Mozart was born here in Salzburg, but disliked the city very much and spent his entire adult life elsewhere. The museum was boring even for avid Mozart fans and we were not sad to leave. Next stop, shopping for presents for the family and of course another Bosna hot dog. Yummy! Dave is upstairs taking a nap and I am just wrapping up a little blogging before dinner. It is definitely sinking in now that our trip is nearing its end and we are both trying to savor every moment. Three more days to go...
